What you need to know about the DURAGESIC® patch
In April of 2004, Janssen Pharmaceutica Products, L.P., a company owned by Johnson & Johnson, announced a nationwide recall of the prescription DURAGESIC® pain patch due to concerns that the product contained a dangerous and potentially deadly defect.
DURAGESIC® is a prescription patch designed to relieve serious and persistent pain. The patch delivers a measured dose of the pain medication fentanyl directly to the skin - reducing pain for up to three days. Fentanyl is a powerful narcotic that is classified as a DEA schedule II controlled substance. According to recall notices, the DURAGESIC® patch was designed with a faulty seal that could potentially leak excessive amounts of fentanyl. When applied to the skin, the patch could lead to a fentanyl overdose, resulting in serious physical symptoms such as nausea, drowsiness, labored breathing, and eventually seizures, respiratory failure, and possibly cardiac arrest, coma, and death. The DURAGESIC® pain patch also has the potential to leak prior to application to the skin. In this situation, patients may be under medicated, eventually experiencing symptoms of withdrawal, including abdominal discomfort and sleeplessness.
There are thousands of DURAGESIC® pain patch users who are potentially at risk for injury stemming from a fentanyl overdose or insufficient pain control. If you or someone you know may be suffering from side effects associated with the DURAGESIC® pain patch, it is important to contact Phillips & Associates today to consult with an experienced attorney.
